Life On The Ranch

Life on the ranch is a unique combination of old ways and new. Horses have been joined by four-wheelers, ledgers replaced by computers, and business is done by fax and email as well as hand shake and over coffee. Branding time is made special by neighbors joining in to make the work go faster, with a huge meal of roast beef and potatoes waiting when the day is done. The first snow means feeding cattle by hand; probably for the rest of the winter. Summer means alfalfa and grass hay harvesting – and short nights. Alfalfa often has to be baled in the wee hours of the morning when there is still dew on the ground.

It is sometimes difficult to “make ends meet,” and some of us hold jobs as well as work the ranch. That is the reality of the agricultural market where cattle sell today for the same price they did forty years ago. The value of this hard work is the reward of leading a style of life free of traffic and crowds – full of peace and quiet. Ranchers are fiercely independent and they work hard to preserve their independence. That dedication to maintain a way of life is part of what created the backbone of Painted Hills Natural Beef. A desire to share a bit of our way of life with others makes up the rest. Why should we keep the best of our efforts all to ourselves?

We invite you to take a peak into our world. View our photo album for photos of Fossil, member ranches and the surrounding countryside. With these pictures, we hope you get a feel for who we are and what our lives are like.
